This film review is well overdue as since encountering Radiance early this year I have watched it over 5 times including the times that I have just listened to the audio as I fell asleep. That is how much impact this film made in my life the first time I watched it and I feel that it deserves even more recognition than it did when it was first released.

Happy feet is one of those films that is cemented in the way I view my childhood. I can remember vividly our family outing to Cineworld, the excitement rising inside of me as we entered Cineworld. The delicious smell of popcorn tantalising my 6 -year-old self, leading me, unfortunately for my parents, to beg and scream for food. I remember sitting comfortably in the chair- legs dangling in the air with a snack box in hand- waiting joyfully for the movie to start. From the opening heart song sequence with Memphis and Norma I was sold, and Happy Feet became my new obsession. As a 6-year-old I was obsessed with Happy Feet and as now a 19-year-old I appreciate it even more. Maybe it could seem a little bit embarrassing that on my 19th year on this Earth I still drop tears at an animated movie targeted at toddlers but there are so many hidden gems and themes in Happy feet that make it one of my favourite movies of all times. I am proud to say that I have watched the film twice this year already and will probably be watching it more in the future. Continue reading “Film Essay: Happy Feet”
You provided warmth,
The heat of the war that rose inside me transformed
My inner thoughts.
You were never mine ,

Inspired by Machuca and the false hope that the socialist regime gave the people.
His thoughts ran far away from the conquest that loomed over him
Far away from the oppression that stared him right in the face
It was foreknown that he could not change his position in this world nor change the way that people thought about his kind
But somewhere deep inside, he had hope
He hoped for a better tomorrow
He hoped that one day he could stand a chance in this big wide world,
That would be the only gift that he would ever receive in this life, Continue reading “A Gift never Received “
“I used to think that it was basically suicide to start to care about something. That the moment you open your self to their embrace they swiftly attack you in your heart with knifes made from their words and actions that you can’t explain. “I thought that you cared for me too” you wonder about their intentions and the value that they place on you – you realise that you are just a small speck of their existence. You realise that to them you ARE insignificant. Continue reading “Sophia – A speck of Wisdom”
Inspired by the animated movie: Your name.
If only I was brave enough to whisper it to the air.
To let the vibrations of the atoms send joyful signals to his ears.
But that would only awaken my fears.
I’m a coward.
I’m scared of exposing my feelings for him.
I’m afraid of looking him in the eye
And telling a lie,
A lie that I know that he wants to hear,
<<I don’t love you>>
Those words, not my own
Those words that I know that he secretly holds in his heart
And believes to be what’s in mine. Continue reading “A Nameless Love”

Michael Landy, a pioneer of the Young British Artists movement, was born in London in 1963. Landy is best known for his performance installation piece “Break down” where he destroyed and displayed all his possessions. In 2008, Landy was elected as a member of the Royal Academy of Arts London and continues to make a big impact in the artistic industry.
‘Creeping Buttercup’, which is a detailed study of individual weeds, is a part of Nourishment -a collection of etching pieces. It is said that to acquire the materials needed as inspiration for Creeping Buttercup, Landy found weeds growing in the street.
The meticulous study of the weeds signifies the miraculous growth that can occur in an unfruitful / famine – filled land. Just as in an urban street it is unlikely to find a lot of green spaces. Continue reading “Weeding out Hopelessness”
<<J’adore les langues>> is an expression that could be translated as “I love languages” or “I love tongues”. Both translations to an eye that is used to the English tongue might find the two statements to be completely different expressions but they do mean the same thing.
Language is certainly a beautiful thing. A complex system for which one comes to understand the world and to contemplate its existence. Has this ever happened to you: you are sitting in a rocking chair, in your winter gown, by a fire place and a thought comes to your mind. Where does language come from? It has happened to me -minus the winter gown and rocking chair- I sometimes find myself pondering about the phenomena that is the human language. Whether you believe that human languages like any other language ,e.g from non-human creatures, are just mediums for which we use to communicate with each other and thus, only have a social purpose. Or you believe that language is more of an expressive platform that helps us to build our mental faculty so is thus innate.
Any standpoint one takes to define language still does not fully explain the origins of the human language which is forever evolving – the English language has changed so much in the past 100 years. The various human languages can be used to create poetic and meaningful phrases – the mind boggling grammatical systems of the world is yet another example of the beautiful complexity of the human language.
These feelings of tension in my chest – that I cannot explain.
Why do I envy things that I should not have , that I do not need?
I do not deserve.
That I should not think of.
That I do not belong in Continue reading “Your lies”
